Unique Terroir

Protection against the influence of the Atlantic, creating a hydrographic basin with a specific microclimate, which can be characterised overall as a temperate Atlantic climate. This mountain range mainly affects rainfall, humidity and air temperature, key factors in the qualitative differentiation of our Alvarinho.

High average air temperature during the summer months coinciding with the ripening of the grapes and resulting in hot days and cool nights, favour moderate alcohol content with fresh acidity and aromatic intensity.

In the basin of the River Minho which coincides with the Monção and Melgaço sub-region rainfall is distinct, falling mainly in the winter months, thus favouring water reserves in the soil and balanced ripening.

Soils of Granite Origin

The moderate rainfall in relation to the rest of the Vinhos Verdes area, associated with well-drained soils of granite, origin favours the quality of the grapes and the mineral touch present in practically all Soalheiros.

Driving Systems

Ascendent System

80% of the vines are in descendent system - a system introduced in Alvarinho Region and very adapted 50% of the Loureiro to blend with Alvarinho came from this system and from Vinhos Verdes region with atlantic influence like Lima valley. Loureiro has primary aromas like “litchy” and this Atlantic terroir is the perfect one. We bland the grapes from this system with ascendent system to achieve the better flavour equilibrium with low alcohol concentration. to the style of Soalheiro more intense in fruit and minerality we want, because this system only have partial exposure of the grapes to the sun reduces the degradation of the aromatic profile of the grapes and achieve a perfect balance between acidity, flavour and moderate alcohol.

Sistema Ascendente

19% of the vineyards are in ascendent system - the system more used all over the word and that can have different configurations (ryat, sylvoz, guiot, bilateral, etc) where the grapes are very exposed to the sun and them the reducing of acidity and aroma is more important. This grapes are used in the blend and to produce wines were the aromatic intensity of the is less important like the Soalheiro Reserva. Vinhão used in Soalheiro Oppaco and Touriga Nacional used in the Brut Rosé came form our vines in this system. 50% of the Loureiro to blend with Alvarinho comes from this System and from Vinhos Verdes region with atlantic influence like Lima valley. Loureiro has primary aromas like “litchy” and this Atlantic terroir is the perfect one. We bland the grapes from this system with descendent system to achieve the better flavour equilibrium with low alcohol concentration.

Ramada ou Parreira

1% of the vines have this system and very used in Galicia to produce Alvarinho. In this system the grapes have the lowest direct exposure to the sun and them the aromatic profile is hight intensity in the harvest and the concentration of acidity also very hight. Usually the wines from this grapes have malolactic fermentation that reduces the aromatic intensity change the profile in the mouth filing. This grapes in Soalheiro are used in the blend and for different wines that need malolactic profile.

Quinta de Soalheiro has evolved steadily and gradually. The winery, which was recently refurbished, creates an area where it is possible to optimise the winemaking capability with specific areas for fermentation and ageing, while maintaining the conditions to pamper the wines, making them unique. The small essential details are not overlooked to ensure consistency in the quality of the great wines, creating an area which functionally respects winegrowing and winemaking tradition, opening the doors to the discovery of the different Soalheiros.

Soalheiro is considered an expert in Alvarinho by international and national opinion leaders and several versions of the variety are highlighted in its range of wines:

Intense: a vision of fruit represented by Soalheiro Clássico, 100% Alvarinho and, indeed, a classic, being the wine with the greatest international presence; without forgetting the innovative Soalheiro ALLO and Soalheiro 9%, two innovative wines that stand out for their moderate alcohol content with great elegance and freshness, which set out to highlight that moderately low alcohol is also associated with high quality wines.

Mineral: a mineral vision of the Alvarinho variety, with Soalheiro Primeiras Vinhas, a benchmark among Alvarinhos and considered, several times the Best National White Wine; and Soalheiro Reserva, the ultimate expression of the Alvarinho grape variety with barrel fermentation. In addition, there is Soalheiro Granit and the first red wine, Soalheiro Oppaco, also a pioneer because it is a red wine from the region made with a batch of red grapes (Vinhão) and white grapes (Alvarinho).

Natural: our vision of natural wines are unfiltered wines, which find expression in Soalheiro Nature, without added sulphites and bolder, and in Soalheiro Terramatter, a more pleasant wine, of high elegance. The launch of these two natural wines opens the doors to innovation and to a new world of tasting pleasures previously unknown to us.

Sparkling: the two Soalheiro sparkling wines, the classic Soalheiro Bruto and Soalheiro Bruto Rosé, are wholly different – the first one is 100% Alvarinho, more aromatic, and the second one is more elegant and mineral, with Alvarinho and Touriga Nacional.

Spirit: the Quinta de Soalheiro Aged Alvarinho Grape Marc Spirit – from the first harvest, this spirit is distilled from the best Alvarinho pressed grapes, and aged for several years in oak barrels, from which it obtains its colour and structure, which complete the intense aroma of the variety.
